Snowboarding Jackets Style and Features
Posted on: December 26, 2010
Snowboarding jackets are about much more than just keeping warm and keeping wet snow out. They also are fashionable and add a bit of flair to their wearer while he or she flies through white powder. They are a great combination of form and function, and no serious snow boarder would think about hitting the slopes with anything else. Here is a basic introduction to snowboarding jackets, and what you should look for as you consider purchasing one.
First, the best jackets are well-engineered technical gear that will aid you in the adventures you take on the slopes. Most importantly they will be waterproof and breathable. Waterproof shells are important for obvious reasons. When the powder is flying, one wants to make sure it doesn't melt into the jacket making life miserable. However, one doesn't want to wear a suffocating plastic bag either. Breathability ensures that perspiration and accumulated moisture inside the jacket can find its way out. Fortunately, engineers have designed fabrics that exhibit both qualities. Gore-tex is a well-known, patented technology that was developed with this in mind, just to name one brand you can look out for.
Some additional features you can look for to enhance waterproofing and breathability: draw-cord waist gaiters that allow you to seal securely around the waist; air vents underneath the arms to enhance breathability, well-designed zippers that will handle the wear and tear of zipping through, and sometimes falling on, snow and ice and that create waterproof seals when zipped up; inside pockets with zippers to securely hold wallets, keys, etc.
Snowboarding jackets can be found with thick inner insulation that basically serves as a single solution for snowboarding. Another approach, and one perhaps more popular with snowboarders, is to have thin jackets that basically act as waterproof and breathable shells to put over other layers of clothes. The latter type affords the user some flexibility in calibrating how much protection to put on. When the wind is pounding, he or she can layer up many times over. If conditions are more pleasant, perhaps a single layer under the shell will do. It all depends on the general conditions the snowboarder expects to encounter and what he or she considers most convenient.
Jackets can be quite expensive - upwards of $600 for a serious jacket having all the features one can imagine. Most don't need something quite that elaborate. More budget-friendly jackets that perform well can be found for $100 to $200. But in the lower price ranges, one wants to be extra careful one isn't skimping on necessary features that will make the snowboarding far more enjoyable.
And as for color and style, one should simply keep in mind that bright colors help distinguish you when moving fast on the slopes. Besides that, just pick the color and style that you like! This is the fun part!
